What is xkcd?
xkcd is a web comic started in 2005 by American author Randall Munroe. The comic's tagline sais it is "a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language". Munroe states on the comic's website that the name of the comic is not an initialism but "just a word with no phonetic pronunciation".
In comic number 936 Munroe calcs the entropy of passwords that uses a common pattern of numbers and lower- / uppercase letters and compares it with entropy of a random four words password. Thats called now a xkcd password. Learn more about secure passwords and xkcd in the link-list below.
What are xkcd passwords?
Munroe stated in his famous comic number 936 that passwords containing 4 different random english words are much stronger than the suggested passwords with numbers, letters, caps and punctuation.
The comic contains the math to calc the entropy of the two different styles of password and according to Munroe the xkcd styled passwords are nearly twice as strong and of course much easier to remember.
