"In war, animals are victims too,” says Alaa Aljaleel, the cat rescuer of Idlib. In one of the last rebel strongholds of Syria’s civil war, he cares for injured and abandoned cats.

Around 400 cats live with Alaa Aljaleel in his animal shelter, and a few more drop by now and then when they're hungry. This is not Alaa's profession: he usually cares for people, as a paramedic. Millions of refugees live in Idlib, often just barely surviving. Not everyone takes kindly to Alaa Aljaleel’s focus on animals amid so much human suffering. "But for me,” he says "humanity also means not forgetting the animals.” A report by Omar Albam.
